Project Overview:
We are seeking experienced and empathetic nurses to provide specialized care for our family member with advanced Huntington’s disease. This project encompasses a 6-month contract, with the potential for extension based on her evolving needs and the progression of her condition.
Responsibilities:
Deliver attentive and compassionate care tailored to the unique needs of a patient with advanced Huntington’s disease.
Implement symptom management strategies to alleviate motor symptoms, psychiatric disturbances, and cognitive impairments associated with the disease.
Conduct physical therapy sessions to maintain mobility, prevent contractures, and improve overall physical function and independence.
Administer medications, including neuroleptics, antidepressants, and anti-chorea agents, as prescribed by healthcare professionals, to manage symptoms and enhance quality of life.
Provide assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, toileting, and feeding, to ensure the patient’s comfort and well-being.
Collaborate closely with the patient’s medical team, including neurologists, psychiatrists, and physical therapists, to coordinate care, optimize treatment strategies, and address emerging needs and challenges.
Offer emotional support and companionship to the patient, fostering a sense of security, dignity, and connection in her daily life.
Requirements:
Certification as a registered nurse with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in neurology, psychiatry, or geriatric care.
Proficiency in symptom management techniques for Huntington’s disease, including medication administration, behavioral interventions, and supportive therapies.
Strong understanding of the physical, cognitive, and psychiatric manifestations of Huntington’s disease and their impact on the patient’s functioning and quality of life.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in a home environment, demonstrating empathy, patience, and flexibility in addressing the complex needs of the patient.
Excellent communication skills and a compassionate demeanor, building trust and rapport with the patient and her family members.
Patient Case:
Huntington’s Disease
Patient: 50-year-old female
Condition: The patient is grappling with advanced Huntington’s disease, a hereditary neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive motor dysfunction, cognitive decline, and psychiatric disturbances. She requires comprehensive care to manage her symptoms and optimize her quality of life amidst the challenges posed by the disease.
Care Plan:
Symptom Management: Implement a multifaceted approach to managing motor symptoms (chorea, rigidity, dystonia), psychiatric disturbances (depression, anxiety, irritability), and cognitive impairments (memory loss, executive dysfunction) associated with Huntington’s disease.
Physical Therapy: Conduct regular physical therapy sessions to maintain mobility, prevent muscle contractures, and improve overall physical function and independence, enhancing the patient’s quality of life and promoting her well-being.
Medication Administration: Administer prescribed medications, including neuroleptics, antidepressants, anxiolytics, and anti-chorea agents, to manage symptoms, alleviate distress, and enhance the patient’s comfort and functioning.
Assistance with ADLs: Provide compassionate assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and feeding, to support the patient’s independence, dignity, and well-being, fostering a sense of security and normalcy in her daily life.
Collaboration with Medical Team: Work closely with the patient’s medical team, including neurologists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists, to coordinate care, optimize treatment strategies, and address emerging needs and challenges, ensuring comprehensive and holistic care for the patient.
Emotional Support: Offer empathetic emotional support and companionship to the patient, creating a nurturing and supportive environment that promotes her emotional well-being, resilience, and sense of connection amidst the challenges of living with Huntington’s disease.
