About the Client:
We are deeply committed to the well-being of our 8-year-old child who has cerebral palsy. One of the significant challenges our child faces is dysphagia, putting them at risk of aspiration and other complications during feeding. Our primary goal is to ensure safe and effective swallowing function to support their nutritional intake and overall health.

Project Overview:
We are seeking an experienced nursing team specializing in pediatric care and dysphagia management to provide comprehensive support for our child with cerebral palsy. This project entails implementing swallowing therapy, modifying diets, and utilizing assistive feeding devices to address dysphagia and reduce the risk of aspiration during feeding.

Responsibilities:

– **Swallowing Therapy:**
– Conduct a thorough assessment of the child’s swallowing function, including oral-motor skills, sensory issues, and coordination of swallowing muscles.
– Develop and implement a customized swallowing therapy plan focused on improving swallowing coordination, strength, and safety, utilizing evidence-based techniques and exercises.

– **Modified Diets:**
– Collaborate with a pediatric dietitian to develop modified diets tailored to the child’s swallowing abilities and nutritional needs, ensuring that food and liquid consistencies are safe and manageable for swallowing.
– Provide education and training to the child’s caregivers on how to prepare and administer modified diets at home, emphasizing proper food textures and presentation.

– **Assistive Feeding Devices:**
– Evaluate the child’s need for assistive feeding devices such as specialized utensils, cups, or feeding syringes to facilitate safe and efficient feeding.
– Recommend and facilitate the use of assistive feeding devices that are appropriate for the child’s age, developmental level, and swallowing abilities, ensuring proper fitting and functionality.

– **Family Education and Support:**
– Educate and support the child’s family in understanding the nature of dysphagia, its potential complications, and the importance of adherence to swallowing therapy and dietary modifications.
– Offer guidance and troubleshooting strategies to help the family manage feeding challenges and promote optimal nutritional intake and hydration for the child.

Requirements:

– **Qualifications and Experience:**
– Certification or extensive experience in pediatric nursing and dysphagia management, with a focus on providing specialized care to children with cerebral palsy and feeding difficulties.
– Proficiency in conducting swallowing assessments, implementing swallowing therapy techniques, and recommending assistive feeding devices to support safe and effective swallowing function.

– **Skills and Competencies:**
– Strong clinical assessment skills to evaluate swallowing function and identify areas of dysfunction or aspiration risk, utilizing validated assessment tools and observation techniques.
– Effective communication and teaching skills to educate caregivers on dysphagia management strategies, dietary modifications, and the use of assistive feeding devices, empowering them to provide safe and supportive care for the child.

– **Personal Attributes:**
– Compassion, patience, and empathy in working with children with special needs and their families, recognizing the unique challenges they face and providing support in a sensitive and respectful manner.
