Project Overview:
We are seeking a skilled nursing team to provide specialized care for our young client with cerebral palsy. The project involves implementing swallowing therapy techniques, modifying textures and consistencies of food and liquids, and offering nutritional support to promote safe swallowing function and adequate nutrition.

Responsibilities:

– **Swallowing Therapy:**
– Administer swallowing therapy sessions as prescribed by the healthcare team to improve swallowing function and coordination.
– Implement exercises and techniques to strengthen oromotor muscles and enhance swallowing reflexes.

– **Texture Modification:**
– Modify food and liquid textures and consistencies to match the child’s swallowing abilities, ensuring safety and preventing aspiration.
– Collaborate with speech-language pathologists and dietitians to develop individualized dietary plans based on the child’s swallowing capabilities and nutritional requirements.

– **Nutritional Support:**
– Monitor the child’s nutritional intake and hydration status, assessing for signs of malnutrition or dehydration.
– Provide nutritional counseling and education to the child’s family, offering guidance on appropriate food choices and meal planning to support optimal growth and development.

– **Collaboration and Monitoring:**
– Collaborate closely with the interdisciplinary healthcare team, including speech-language pathologists, dietitians, and occupational therapists, to coordinate care and optimize treatment strategies.
– Monitor the child’s progress in swallowing therapy and nutritional status, adjusting interventions as needed based on ongoing assessments and evaluations.

Requirements:

– **Qualifications and Experience:**
– Registered nurses (RNs) with experience or training in pediatric nursing, particularly in caring for children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as cerebral palsy.
– Familiarity with dysphagia management techniques and pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders.

– **Skills and Competencies:**
– Proficiency in administering swallowing therapy and conducting oromotor assessments to evaluate swallowing function.
– Knowledge of pediatric nutrition and dietary modifications, including the ability to modify food textures and consistencies safely and effectively.

– **Personal Attributes:**
– Compassion, patience, and a child-centered approach to care, fostering a supportive and nurturing environment for the child and their family.
– Effective communication skills to collaborate with the healthcare team and provide education and support to the child’s family members.

By delivering comprehensive care and support tailored to the child’s unique needs, the nursing team aims to improve swallowing function, ensure nutritional adequacy, and enhance the overall quality of life for the 8-year-old child with cerebral palsy.
