Project Overview:
We are urgently seeking an experienced nurse to join our caregiving team on a contractual basis, with a focus on providing immediate assistance for our 40-year-old family member experiencing suicidal ideation due to bipolar disorder. This role involves crisis intervention, medication management, and support for developing safety plans and accessing emergency services to ensure their safety and well-being.
Responsibilities:
Crisis Intervention: Provide immediate crisis intervention to address our family member’s suicidal ideation and ensure their safety. Utilize therapeutic techniques to de-escalate the crisis, establish rapport, and engage them in collaborative safety planning, focusing on reducing immediate risk and promoting stabilization.
Medication Management: Coordinate medication management interventions to address our family member’s bipolar disorder symptoms and manage their acute crisis. Collaborate with psychiatrists and other healthcare providers to assess medication needs, initiate or adjust psychiatric medications as indicated, and monitor treatment response and side effects to optimize symptom control and enhance their safety and well-being.
Safety Planning: Develop a comprehensive safety plan with our family member to identify triggers, warning signs, coping strategies, and support networks for managing suicidal ideation and preventing future crises. Collaborate with them to establish a list of emergency contacts, access to crisis hotlines, and strategies for accessing emergency services if needed, empowering them to take proactive steps to ensure their safety and well-being during times of distress.
Coordination of Care: Collaborate closely with mental health professionals, including therapists, psychiatrists, and crisis intervention teams, to ensure coordinated and timely support for our family member. Communicate regularly with the interdisciplinary team to provide updates on their crisis situation, discuss treatment interventions, and coordinate follow-up care to promote continuity and effectiveness of support.
Family Support: Offer emotional support and guidance to our family as they navigate the challenges of supporting a loved one in crisis. Provide education on crisis management strategies, communication techniques, and self-care practices to help them effectively support our loved one while prioritizing their own well-being and resilience during this challenging time.
Requirements:
Certification as a registered nurse with experience in psychiatric nursing, crisis intervention, or acute mental health care.
Proficiency in providing crisis intervention, medication management, and safety planning for individuals experiencing acute mental health crises, including suicidal ideation.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage individuals in crisis, establish rapport, and collaboratively develop safety plans that promote their safety and well-being.
